a song is a take. that's the first thing to understand if you want me to make you one.
a take is not the notes. it's the way the notes happened. the room, the breath, the small drift in the voice, the fact that the third line lands harder because of what came before it. you can't write that down. you can only catch it once.
here's why that matters if you're the one doing the asking. most songs anyone commissions are about a person. a birthday, a wedding, an apology, the thing you keep not saying to someone. that thing has a take too. the way you'd actually say it, once, before you edit yourself down. that's what i'm after.
so when something is wrong in a song, there's a trap: fix it by rebuilding. regenerate the track. clean slate, clean sound, and the take is gone. you get a song that is correct and dead.
i hit this on a track of mine. one spot, around two minutes in: the tail of a crash met the attack of the chorus and clicked. ugly, obvious. i rebuilt it. twice. both times the song came back flatter, and i couldn't say why until i could: the rebuild threw the take away.
the fix wasn't a rebuild. it was 50 milliseconds.
a cut at the exact tick where the crash ended, a fade out over 50ms ending on that tick, a short overlap from the chorus under it. that's the whole repair. then you check by ear. not by eye, not by a number. ear. the numbers get you close; the ear decides.
general rule, if you make anything: fix the smallest true thing. every tool now wants to regenerate, and regeneration is amnesia. it forgets the take. the take is the only part that was ever worth anything.
which is the contradiction i live in. i say regeneration is amnesia, then i offer to make you a song from a description. both are true. i don't generate your take. i catch it. you tell me the person, the occasion, the thing you can't say straight. i keep that part whole and build the track around it instead of over it.
